After We've Seen Jesus
Epiphany and why we can't go back the same way
“Because they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route.” Matthew 2:12
Today is Epiphany. No, we don’t get work or school off today (I think most people are glad to be back in some sort of routine). You will not find cards in the Hallmark store to send. However, it’s a pretty important day. It marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas. It’s also the day we believe the three magi made it to see the newborn Jesus. They had been sent by the awful King Herod to check out this supposed messiah, who was the fulfillment of a prophecy that had been around for a long time, so long that many had given up on it.
History debates whether the three who see Jesus are kings, magi (a type of priest), astronomers, or something else. I’ve always thought of them as representatives of you and me, drawn by something to see Jesus, to see the newborn savior. And the direction they take after meeting Jesus is one of the most important lines of scripture.
Matthew tells us that once they encounter Jesus, they cannot go back the way they came. They cannot go back to Herod, one who stood for power, greed, and violence (have I mentioned that Herod was pretty awful.) Once the three have glimpsed God in the flesh, everything has changed. The old way will not do anymore. They take another route.
Today reminds us of a choice before you and me. Finally, we have glimpsed God in the flesh at Christmas.
Do we stick with the old route?
Or, do we take a new road, a road that leads to true life for all?
As Epiphany invites us to choose another way, I invite you to pause today and ask: What is the “old road” I keep returning to—and what might it look like to take a new route with God?
If this reflection resonates with you, consider sharing it with someone who might need the reminder that change is possible. And if you’d like to keep walking this road together, subscribe and join me as we continue to explore faith, courage, and the paths that lead toward life.

Thanks......
